Beer! Chicago’s Early German Immigrants and the Fight for Lager
with Liz Garibay,
Historian and Executive Director, Chicago Brewseum

The popovers, a perennial favorite, and the flight of biers proved a hit on a cold,  snowy, winter day when close to 100 Dames, Warriors and guests gathered in the warmth of good company at the lovely Indian Hill Club for our annual brunch.

Liz Garibay, Founder and Executive Director of the Brewseum, entertained us with a historical lens to biers, ales, lagers and porters from early America to Chicago World’s Fair and some 20th century highlights during which we enjoyed samples of traditional 1800’s Chicago German bier

Guests came away with a clearer appreciation of how the German immigrant population affected the development of a nascent Chicago – from politics and commerce to community relationships and pub culture.  American-Germans assimilated as citizens and patriots, while blending their hearts and sensibilities from their country of origin into their newly established homestead.  Garibay also shared the culinary history of beer from grains/corn/rice/yeast.

Dames and Warriors were delighted to share the occasion with guest Laurin Mack who is the progeny of one of the founding brewers in Illinois and whose revived beers were served (Metropolitan Brewery).
