“Gone With The Wind:  The Making of a Hollywood Classic”
by Leslie Goddard, author, historian and dramatist

On December 9, we had a record attendance of 67 Dames and guests who enjoyed a blockbuster Holiday program and luncheon to remember. The Toys for Tots gift drive was a success, with great generosity of toys and donations that will make spirits bright. The Illinois Society was delighted to welcome Sergeant Berry, who graciously presented NSCDA-IL with a certificate of appreciation.  All savored the Fortnightly chef’s holiday meal.

Historian and actress, Leslie Goddard gave a spirited presentation about the making of the Hollywood classic, Gone with the Wind.  For as much of an epic that Gone with the Wind truly is, its production was chaotic. From the never-ending search for Scarlett and disgruntled actors and directors, it seems short of a miracle that the film happened. Goddard spoke to the many reasons for enduring success and the hold this movie has had over audiences for the past 80 years, including its landmark status as an Academy Award winner (12 awards); the highest grossing films, adjusted for inflation and its technical achievement.  In summary she suggested that it endures because it leaves us with the vision of hope with Scarlett’s last line of the film, “I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all…tomorrow is another day!”
