“Art That Doesn’t Know Its Name”

With William Swislow,
Journalist; Art Collector; Board Member, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art

Transcending Genres

Our thanks to The Fortnightly of Chicago for inviting Illinois Dames to their virtual program about Outsider Art, profiling the art and artists that every aspiring collector and art enthusiast should know about.

An Inside Track on Outsider Art

Some of the most powerful art of the last one hundred years has happened beyond museum walls. Today, Outsider Art has gained acceptance in even the most conservative bastions of the art world.  Members and guests discovered what is so exciting about this “art that doesn’t know its name,” created by people with no formal training, but often touched with creative genius.

The next virtual event in our summer program series with The Fortnightly of Chicago is a dramatization of distinguished and glamorous Dame Rue Winterbotham Carpenter, who joined NSCDA-IL in 1927. Her portrait hangs at Lathrop House in the drawing room. Rue was a noted art collector and philanthropist, who, in addition to her memberships in the Dames and Fortnightly, co-founded the Arts Club of Chicago. There is much more to know about fascinating Rue, so please join us digitally as Mary Beth Brown interprets her life and times:  August 27 at 1 p.m. on Zoom.
