Our thanks to The Fortnightly of Chicago for inviting Illinois Dames to a timely film discussion. Forty-two attendees participated in an engaging and thought provoking discussion about contemporary film.
Art and Auteurs
Lee focused on the works of American filmmakers, who speak powerfully to their experiences through their art. He gave a general overview of how filmmakers are confronting systemic racism in our culture and shared additional film recommendations.
Acknowledging the power of art, artists, and ideas to shape the arc of communities and to transform the landscape of our individual and collective beliefs, viewers were encouraged to discuss a variety of narratives – including Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Da 5 Bloods, as well I Am Not Your Negro, 13th, and When They See Us.
