The America’s Cup, the pinnacle of yachting, was first contested in 1851 making it the oldest trophy in international sport. The owners of winning yacht, America, donated the £100 Cup to the New York Yacht Club under the condition that it serve as “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations.” The first challenge for the Cup was 150 years ago, from Englishman James Ashbury, who raced against a fleet of the New York Yacht Club in New York Harbor in 1870. Ashbury lost the race but he promptly challenged again for a second contest the following year.

Our speaker Steven Tsuchiya, told the story how the America’s Cup became a “challenge cup” and how the NYYC defended the Cup in 1870, including the involvement of Schuyler and Hamilton families. He also related this first defense to what is happening this March 2021 as the NYYC and other yacht clubs challenge the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for the Cup in the 36th America’s Cup Match.
